In this section you’ll find articles with our top roulette tips for 2021, and articles covering every aspect of the game: its history, how to play the game, which variant to play, and how to stay safe and secure while playing online. Just browse through the links on the right including How to Win at Roulette (the 6 million dollar question!) A warning- it might not be what you want to hear!

If you haven’t much time, or just want a quick summary, here are our Top 10 Roulette Tips to help you when playing the game.

Please quickly read through them all- we promise you, it will be a good use of your time and might save you some money!

Tip 1. Study the Games and Find Out the House Edge

Most bets on a roulette wheel have the same house edge, which is 2.7% for European Roulette and 5.4% for American Roulette (the lower the number, the better for you- the payout is are 97.3% and 94.6% respectively).

However, if you can find a casino that plays either the “en Prison” rule or “La Partage” rule, you can skim this down to 1.3% (98.7% payout). You’ll normally find this on French Roulette variants, when you play even money bets like Red/Black. If the 0 drops in, you get another free spin of the wheel, or you get half your bet back.

Tip 2. Weight Your Bets to the Outside Bets

Try and weight your bets towards types of bets that give you a decent coverage of the table- with higher roulette odds and a decent probability of winning. You won’t need such deep pockets. In practice, this means the outside bets like Odd/Even, Columns or the Dozens bet. Don’t be tempted to play too many low probability bets like single number bets.

This would seem like common sense, but many people get seduced by the higher payouts. Generally speaking, the higher the payout, the longer you’ll need to wait in between wins, so you’ll need a bigger bankroll with the higher paying bets to ride out any losses. This doesn’t mean that you have to stick entirely to low risk bets, just make sure you weight your activity towards these.

Tip 3. Play Roulette Systems But Be A Cynic

It’s fine to test systems out- we’ve got plenty of free roulette systems here on roulette17.com, but just understand that no system is going to fundamentally change the odds you get at the roulette table, which are a function of the design of the wheel and the payout schedule, both of which are fixed. If someone is telling you otherwise, they are lying.

Never pay for roulette systems that claim to have broken the “roulette code”. Systems are useful for making your play more methodically and nothing else. The Caro Roulette System is the only system we know that reduces the house edge to zero. If you follow the complicated instructions, you won´t be making any bets at all!

Tip 4. Call it a Day if You Win Big

If you happen to win on a riskier bet (like a single number), then think about calling it a day if you are well in profit. The chances are, that you won’t win a single number bet again for a while.

Tip 5. Play European Roulette

If there is one roulette tip you should come away with after reading this article, it’s this one. Always play European Roulette over American Roulette. (Read our article on why roulette wheels have a zero). It’s common sense. Unless you like betting on zero pockets, there really is no reason to bet on a wheel with an extra zero- there’s just one more chance that your bet will lose.

The house edge on European Roulette is 2.7%. In American, it’s 5.4%. Why give the house a bigger edge?

Tip 6. Play French Roulette with La Partage if You Can Find It.

Search for an online roulette casino with French variants that plays “La Partage” or the en prison rule. The French games on the Spin Palace roulette offers this. On these variants, you can whittle the house edge down to 1.3% as you get half your bet back when the ball lands in zero (or you get a free spin) on even money bets.

Tip 7. Avoid the Five Number Bet on 0,00,1,2 and 3

Never place a five-number bet. The odds are the worst on the table. You only see this bet on American Roulette wheel in any case, which you should be avoiding if you have read point 5! The house edge on this bet is 7.3%- avoid it!

Extra Roulette Tip

If you like to play fast, but prefer live roulette with a physical wheel rather than video roulette with an RNG, then look for a live automatic wheel. These are physical games but the wheel is spun by machine rather than by a croupier- the action is faster.

Tip 8. Avoid Novelty Games with Fewer Numbers

In general, we’d recommend you steer clear of what we call “novelty” roulette games like Mini Roulette and Double Spin Bonus roulette. Generally speaking, the more pockets that are on the wheel that are not red or black, the worse your odds. Or the less red or black pockets there are, the worse off you are.

So mini roulette has 12 numbers versus 36 in a standard european roulette wheel. 7.7% of the area of the wheel is taken up by the zero pocket, versus 2.7% in European roulette. Which means that there is a greater chance that the ball will drop in to the zero pocket. Do you notice anything familiar with the percentages? These are equal to the house edge, so mini roulette has a much bigger house advantage.

Tip 9. Avoid Games with Extra Pockets and Side Bets

The same goes with side bets such as the ones you see in progressive games like the Age of the Gods Roulette and some of the IGT variants like Triple Bonus Roulette. Avoid them if you can and stick to a basic wheel. They are just designed to make you bet more, and the odds on these side bets are generally worse than the standard bets.

If you really want to reduce your risk on roulette, try playing an online roulette tournament. You´ll know exactly how much you are risking up front.

Tip 10. Take Breaks, Don’t Chase Losses and Enjoy Yourself!

Our final and one of our most important tips for roulette: when you are playing, always take breaks (keep your sessions under 20 minutes), never chase losses and most importantly enjoy the game. It helps to set your self a strict stop loss limit and a profit target- 2 limits when you will stop playing after you have either made enough money, or lost enough.

Good luck on the tables!

Roulette Tips FAQs

  • What’s the #1 Tip for Roulette?
Play European Roulette instead of American Roulette
  • What’s the Worst Roulette Tip you have ever heard?
“Increase your bet if you have seen the same colour come up multiple times in a row, eg Red-Red-Red-Red-Red, play an increased bet on Black.”
This is the “Gambler’s Fallacy” – the belief that the result on a single spin of a roulette wheel is somehow influenced by the preceding spins. In fact, each spin is a mutually exclusive event and the odds remain the same for black and red on each spin. The wheel has no brain and it has no memory.
  • Any other Roulette Tips that are worth Sharing?
We see more and more novelty roulette games coming onto the market. Some of these are great, like Lightning Roulette for example which gives you the opportunity of winning a larger than normal payout. Just remember though, in general, the house doesn’t reduce its overall edge in these games – they normally just move the payouts around, so the bigger wins are funded by a reduced payout elsewhere. As a basic rule, the more pockets on the wheel, the higher the house edge.
