How La Partage works

When the ball lands on zero (0), all even-money bets on the table are immediately settled at half-loss. You receive back exactly 50% of your original stake – the casino keeps the other 50%. The spin is then over and a new round begins.

Which bets qualify?

La Partage only applies to even-money outside bets. These pay 1:1 and cover roughly half the wheel:

Are they equivalent?

Mathematically, both rules produce the identical house edge of 1.35% on a single-zero wheel. The difference is in the timing. With La Partage you immediately recover half your stake when zero hits. With En Prison your bet is carried over and rides on the following spin – if your original bet wins, you recover your stake in full; if it loses, you lose everything. On average both outcomes are the same, but En Prison creates more variance and drama.

Which should you prefer?

La Partage is simpler and better for bankroll management – you always know exactly what you get. En Prison is theoretically identical in expected value but slightly higher variance and some would say more entertaining. Some casinos that offer En Prison also let you opt for the La Partage resolution instead (take half immediately), which is worth asking about.

How it Works

Here’s How La Partage works. It’s a French term, because you’ll generally find it on French Roulette tables (head to Monte Carlo if you are not playing online, otherwise see our recommended casino below!). You can also find it on some English tables layouts but its rare.

There is a game called French Live Roulette that plays La Partage at PlayOjo.

On many French Roulette tables, La Partage is offered automatically but check the rules and pay outs. If the ball lands in zero, all even-money bets are instantaneously split into two and half your original bet is returned. No complaints there! This brings the house edge of all even-money bets down to just 1.35%, which can make all the difference if you are playing strategies like the 1326 roulette system.

Martingale System and Fibonacci System players on the even money bets are beneficiaries of this rule.

If you make an inside bet (say a Straight number bet) or a column or section bet- La Partage no longer applies, – you will lose the bet when the ball lands in the zero pocket.

Not Widely Available Stateside

Most US casinos do not offer “La Partage”, but you might be able to find it on the French tables at some of the more upmarket properties on The Strip, such as the Bellagio, the MGM Grand, The Mirage, and The Wynn.

Otherwise, play online and head to the French tables. Most casinos in the US just offer Double Zero roulette which has a house edge of 5.3%. Ouch.

    They are similar in that they both apply in the situation where you have made an even money bet (eg red/black) and the ball lands in zero. In “La Partage”, the house returns half of your bet. In “En prison”, the house carries your bet over to the next spin.
  • Can you get La Partage on American Roulette?
    I have never seen this rule on American wheels. In any case, why would you? Unless you like betting on the 00 I guess. Play it on a single-zero wheel.
