Bitcoin (BTC) remains the world’s leading cryptocurrency and digital payment system, and yes you can play roulette with Bitcoin!

It’s origins are becoming shrouded in myth, but was said to have been thought up by an unknown programmer, or a network of coders who go under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. In 2009 it became available as Open Source code.

$BTC is all about cutting out the money middlemen- the banks to you and me- it’s an unashamedly P2P (peer-to-peer) system where interactions are carried out between users directly. All transactions passing through the Bitcoin system are verified and recorded in a transparent, public distributed ledger called a blockchain.

There is no central hub to the system, or single owner or management. It was the first (and still the most famous) decentralized digital currency. They are also inventing blockchain roulette games now, by the way. Similar, but it’s the game that is hosted in “the Cloud”.

Bitcoin can be exchanged for other currencies, products, and services and there are said to be 10 million unique users using cryptocurrency of some description. Bitcoin has the largest share,

How to Buy Bitcoins

There are 2 ways to get bitcoins: mine them, or buy them. Let’s park the first option as the horse has bolted on that one, unless you have some serious servers and cash to invest. There is a maximum number of bitcoins that can ever be created (21 million).

This was something that was programmed into the Cryptocurrency. It is becoming more and more difficult (and expensive) to solve the mathmatical problems (that’s the mining) that you are required to do to unlock them. So let’s look at how you buy them.

Before you can get your hands on any Bitcoins, you’ll need a Bitcoin “wallet” to hold them in. This is an electronic record of your money- you can install a bitcoin client on your PC, or do it on your phone through an app. Atomic Wallet is a decent bet.

Or a safer option (just in case you lose your phone), is to store your Bitcoin in the Cloud with an online wallet, or go for a hard wallet (a phsical storage device). Once you have a wallet you will get an address ( a long list of letters and numbers like this gobbledegook:
1XVB5cyVd7wXCu1nsP7TahZcMIJ4vT1nGg.

This is what people use to send you money- it’s like an account number.
You can then buy Bitcoins at exchanges like Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, CoinMama, Gemini and Bitsquare. There are many exchanges and this is a growing area, so do your research first! Binance is the largest exchange.

Make sure you control your private keys if you can. These are the keys to your money.

How to Play Roulette with Bitcoin

OK, so you have a wallet, you signed up for an exchange and you’ve bought some Bitcoins with an Old World currency (Fiat) like a British Pound, a US dollar or a Euro. Bear in mind that the currency is still pretty volatile, although it becomes less of a roller-coaster ride every day. The general price trend is up, but that doesn’t mean to say there aren’t some scary price crashes.

If you believe in the currency, we’d recommend you stay in the currency for the longer term so that you don’t get caught out by any price swings, or at least try and sell off in the peaks and buy in the dips.

You now need to find a reputable casino that accepts and pays out in Bitcoin. You’re not going to be able to play with Bitcoin at the Crockfords roulette tables or Les Ambassadeurs in London. Not yet, anyway- you’ll need to head online.

Many sites like Paddy Power Casino only accept credit and debit cards or web wallets. The larger players are starting to develop their platforms for Bitcoin, but we’d say they are not there yet. The most notable exception is Mansion Casino which is one of our favourite roulette casinos anyway.

Or you’ll need a Bitcoin specialist like Oshi.io.

Pros and Cons

  • Easy to move deposits and winnings around
  • The new Bitcoin casinos now offer games from the main game suppiers such as Microgaming, NetEnt etc
  • Many Bitcoin Casinos operate in unregulated markets. Careful!
  • Bitcoin is still volatile. if you plan to cash out into fiat, the exchange rate can swing wildly.
